If you want space savings, power, and flexibility—all from a single desktop computer—you need an all-in-one (AIO) PC.I have been a technology journalist for 30-plus years and have covered just about every kind of computer gear—from the 386SX to 64-core processors—in my long tenure as an editor, a writer, and an advice columnist. For almost a quarter-century, I worked on the seminal, gigantic Computer Shopper magazine (and later, its digital counterpart), aka the phone book for PC buyers, and the nemesis of every postal delivery person.I was Computer Shopper's editor in chief for its final nine years, after which much of its digital content was folded into PCMag.com. I also served, briefly, as the editor in chief of the well-known hard-core tech site Tom's Hardware.I’m one of the consumer PC experts at PCMag, with a particular love for PC gaming. I've played games on my computer for as long as I can remember, which eventually (as it does for many) led me to building and upgrading my own desktop. Through my years here, I've tested and reviewed many, many dozens of laptops and desktops, and I am always happy to recommend a PC for your needs and budget.

The new "computer use" feature can tell AI "where to move the mouse, where to click, what to type, in order to do quite complicated tasks," Anthropic's Chief Science Officer Jared Kaplan said in an interview.SAN FRANCISCO - Anthropic, a startup backed by Alphabet and Amazon.com, released a pair of updated artificial intelligence models on Tuesday, along with a new capability to autonomously perform computer tasks and save users keystrokes. The capability is tailored to software developers and represents a move toward AI agents, programs that require little human intervention to carry out multi-step actions. Researchers have touted agents as a frontier for AI development beyond chatbots, which easily conjure prose or computer code though not actions. The new 3.5 Haiku can generate computer code in a manner "almost comparable" to the version of Sonnet released in June, according to Kaplan.

From a security standpoint, Jonas Kgomo, founder of the AI safety group Equianas Institute, called Claude's computer use "untested AI safety territory" and emphasized that cyberattacks are entirely possible with the new tool. Parrot AI founder Paul Morville tells PCMag in a message that while Anthropic's advice to only use the new feature when you can supervise it is wise, "there is enormous potential for both intentional and unintentional security problems" and could one day be used to help hackers deploy autonomous remote access trojans (AI RATs).This means we can begin grappling with any safety issues before the stakes are too high, rather than adding computer use capabilities for the first time into a model with much more serious risks." Will Ledesma, a senior director at cybersecurity firm Adlumin, tells PCMag in a message that Claude's computer use is cause for concern considering Anthropic's use guidelines and how Claude might be storing or sharing sensitive data.Security pros suggest hackers could trick Claude's 'computer use' into deploying malware. 'I’m majorly crossing my fingers that Anthropic has massive guardrails,' one expert says. The feature, dubbed "computer use," means Claude can autonomously complete tasks on your computer by moving the cursor, opening web pages, typing text, downloading files, and completing other activities. It launched first for developers via the Claude API and is included in the Claude 3.5 Sonnet beta, but could be added to more models in the future.

Anthropic's latest development gives its Claude AI tool the ability to control a PC, reportedly just like a person would. We've built an API that allows Claude to perceive and interact with computer interfaces. This API enables Claude to translate prompts into computer commands. Developers can use it to automate repetitive tasks, conduct testing and QA, and perform open-ended research. In theory, this could make the AI even more useful in automating repetitive computer tasks.blog post focused on computer use acknowledged that this application of Anthropic's AI models is still early in development and, to paraphrase, buggy as heck. The company said that in internal testing, Claude stopped in the middle of an assigned coding task and began opening images of Yellowstone National Park.

Whether you use your PC for games, videos, or even work meetings, you'll need something to help you hear what's happening. Whether it's a gaming PC, a desktop computer, or a laptop, you'll only be able to do that with headphones or external PC speakers.
CNET hasn't fully reviewed many of the computer speakers on this list, but even so, I've included speakers of different styles and prices that all sound great, no matter your budget. After testing dozens of PC speakers over the last ten years, I’ll keep updating this list as new laptop and desktop speakers come out. Before anything else, you'll want to figure out how much you're willing to spend on new PC speakers. Value-priced speakers can deliver acceptable sound, but if you want more premium sound with stronger bass and better clarity, you'll need to spend $200 or more. Bigger speakers tend to sound better, but not everybody has room for larger computer speakers, particularly if you plan to place your speakers on either side of a monitor or even your laptop.PC speakers that come with a subwoofer tend to deliver more bass, but you have to have a place to put the subwoofer. Some of the desktop speakers on this list have analog connectivity, and many offer a digital connection so you can plug them right into a computer with a USB cable. Some computer speakers offer Bluetooth connectivity, which lets you easily pair them with all your devices, including tablets and smartphones. As you might expect, more robust connectivity options tend to add to the cost, but you can find some moderately priced PC speakers that offer good connectivity features.
